Egyptian Leader Stirs Tensions On First Visit To Iran

Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi has urged the Nonaligned Movement to back Syria's rebels, saying the Bashar Assad government has lost its legitimacy. Morsi's speech prompted a walkout by the Syrian delegation. It was also a slap in the face of the summit's host, Iran, which remains a firm supporter of the Assad government.

Egypt's new President Mohammed Morsi is on his first major foreign tour. He's visiting China, and later this week Iran which is hosting a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement. Morsi says he wants to re-assert Egypt's influence in the Middle East and work with other regional powers to find a way to end the conflict in Syria.

Egypt's Military Chiefs Dismissed By New President

Egypt's first freely elected president made history Sunday when he ousted top military chiefs. Mohammed Morsi had been hesitant to confront the country's top brass, who've long been suspicious of the Islamist leader. But in one fell swoop, Morsi shifted the balance of power, ordered top generals into retirement and asserted civilian authority over the military leadership.

Egypt's military said it hit back hard against Islamist militants after 16 soldiers were killed in an ambush near the border with Israel Sunday. State media reported more than 20 militants were killed in operations as part of a new military campaign in northern Sinai. But evidence of the clashes has not been found.

Doubts Emerge Over Egypt's Offensive In Sinai

Earlier this week, the Egyptian military announced it had carried out a major security operation in the Sinai against Islamist militants involved in an ambush that left 16 Egyptian soldiers dead. The military said warplanes and artillery were brought to bear against the militants, and there were reports of up to twenty people dead. But reporters on the ground in north Sinai say they have seen no signs of the government offensive like damage or funerals.

Gunmen Attack Egyptian Checkpoint, Kill 15

Islamist militants attacked a military checkpoint on the Sinai Peninsula Sunday, killing at least 15 Egyptian forces. The gunmen then commandeered two armored vehicles and tried to storm through a checkpoint into the Gaza Strip. One vehicle exploded, and the Israeli military destroyed the other.
