The Prison University Project at San Quentin State Prison organizes volunteer instructors from schools like UC-Berkeley and Stanford, who conduct classes inside the prison walls. Inmates can earn degrees, and in the process, help bring calm to the once-notoriously violent prison.

Jury Reaches Verdict In Calif. Journalist's Murder

A jury in California has convicted a Black Muslim leader in the murders of three men, including journalist Chauncey Bailey. The newspaper editor was gunned down on his way to work four years ago. Bailey had been writing a story about the finances of Your Black Muslim Bakery in Oakland.

Officials Watch Man Drown; City Changes Policy

Alameda, Calif., rescue personnel remained onshore while a man stood in icy water, apparently waiting to die. The firefighters said they were prohibited from rescuing people in the water. Police said they feared he would become violent. Residents said they were outraged.

San Francisco Moves To Ban Yellow Pages

San Francisco is about to ban the delivery of yellow pages, unless residents ask for one. Advocates of the move say the restriction is good for the environment and that the Internet makes printed directories unnecessary for most people. Opponents say yellow page listings are important to businesses. Other cities have tried to curb the number of unwanted phone books with opt-out ordinances, but San Francisco's is the first opt-in only law.

Defense Rests In Trial Involving Murdered Journalist

In Oakland, Calif., the prosecution and defense have rested in the trial of a man accused of ordering the murder of a well-known journalist. Chauncey Bailey, an editor for a local community paper, was gunned down in August 2007. Prosecutors say Bailey was killed because he had run afoul of the leader of a local Black Muslim group.
