U.N. to Discuss Iraq Report

January 29, 2003 • The U.N. Security Council is expected to debate the implications of chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix's report on arms inspections in Iraq. There is disagreement within the council on how to proceed. Hear NPR's Bob Edwards and NPR's Vicky O'Hara.

United Nations - Iraq

January 27, 2003 • In a much anticipated report to the Security Council, the U.N.'s top two weapons inspectors complained that Iraq has not been cooperative enough but asked for more time to continue their search for weapons of mass destruction there. Mohamad ElBaradei said, "We have to date found no evidence that Iraq has revived its nuclear program." But he added that his inspectors' work "should be allowed to run its natural course." Hans Blix, leading the search for chemical and biological weapons, said Iraq has failed to cooperate on substantive matters. Key members of the Security Council are inclined to give inspectors more time. But, reflecting the Bush administration's views, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said, "The more time they get, the more they're getting the run around." NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports from New York.

January 24, 2003 • As the Bush administration presses Iraq to divulge weapons secrets or face attack, Deputy U.S. Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz uses a speech in New York to describe what he calls "real disarmament." The U.S., the U.N. and Weapons Inspections

January 16, 2003 • The United States is trying to make sure that the ongoing weapons inspections in Iraq do not delay a decision on whether to use force there. Top U.N. inspectors have said they need more time to reach conclusions about whether Baghdad is cooperating, and they want to present another report on the matter in March. The United States does not want to defer a decision on force until then. Meanwhile, the top two U.N. inspectors, who travel to Baghdad this weekend, have warned Iraq it must do much more to help the inspection process. NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports.

N. Korea Nuclear Program

January 7, 2003 • The United States now says it is willing to talk to N. Korea to try to resolve the crisis over the North's nuclear weapons program. Previously, Washington had ruled out direct talks until North Korea abandoned its efforts to build the bomb. The new U.S. position represents a minor compromise. The State Department still says the U.S. will not make any concessions to get the North to freeze its weapons program. NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports.

North Korea's Nukes

January 6, 2003 • The Bush administration welcomes the decision of the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency to give North Korea another chance to meet its obligation under international nuclear agreements. The IAEA, like the United States, is calling on the north to dismantle its nuclear weapons program as a step toward an international dialogue on the poverty-stricken nation's security and economic needs.
