N. Korea

The United States is consulting friends and allies about the next steps in dealing with North Korea. Last week, it was revealed that North Korea has a program to enrich uranium for use in nuclear weapons. Pyongyang says it is willing to negotiate the issue but Washington says there is nothing to negotiate about as long as North Korea continues to pursue nuclear weapons. Vicky O'Hara reports.

Pakistan and North Korea

U.S. officials have identified Russia, China and primarily Pakistan as suppliers of nuclear weapons technology to North Korea. The officials suggest that Pakistan provided Pyongyang with the technology to enrich uranium in exchange for North Korean missiles capable of hitting targets in northern India. NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports from Washington.

N. Korea Nuclear Weapons Program

North Korea has conceded it has a nuclear weapons program, but the Bush administration says it wants to address the problem diplomatically rather than militarily. This approach contrasts with U.S. policy toward Iraq. Washington has threatened the use of force against Iraq if Baghdad does not dismantle its programs to develop weapons of mass destruction. President Bush has labeled both North Korea and Iraq as part of the "axis of evil," but administration officials say that does not mean the United States should respond the same way to both countries. The Bush administration continues to urge the U.N. Security Council to adopt a tough new resolution on Iraq -- one that threatens the use of force if Baghdad does not give U.N. weapons inspectors unfettered access. United Nations - Iraq Resolution

The United States and other permanent members of the U.N. Security Council have yet to resolve their differences over a proposed resolution on Iraq. The United States wants the resolution to include a threat of force if Iraq does not abandon its weapons of mass destruction. Other governments are balking at that provision, but the White House says the talks are not deadlocked.
