Yemen - Missionaries Killed

December 20, 2002 • Secretary of State Colin Powell last night declared Iraq to be in "material breach" of a U.N. disarmament resolution. NPR's Vicky O'Hara says this finding could set the United States on a course toward war with Saddam Hussein early next year.

December 19, 2002 • Weapons inspectors will brief the U.N. Security Council on their assessment of Iraq's weapons declaration. United States and British officials have said the documents represent less than a full and accurate accounting of Iraq's weapons program. NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports.

U.N. on Iraq Weapons

December 19, 2002 • Today the United States said Iraq has committed a "new material breach" of U.N. resolutions by failing to disclose its efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction. In using the phrase "material breach" the United States is not signaling an imminent war, according to U.S. officials. The U.S. statement came after the top two U.N. weapons inspectors told the Security Council this morning that Iraq's 12,000-page weapons declaration leaves many questions unanswered. NPR's Vicky O'Hara has the story from Washington.

United Nations - Iraq Assessment

December 10, 2002 • NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports from New York that chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix has given the United Nations Security Council a preliminary assessment of Iraq's declaration concerning its weapons programs. Blix lunched with Security Council members and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan today. Some Council members are upset that the full report has been given to the five permanent members of the council, including the United States. The other ten members, which are non-nuclear states -- will receive a censored version.
