NATO to Increase Troop Levels in Afghanistan

NATO has announced that it will increase its troop presence in Afghanistan to help provide security for elections set for September. But the number of troops being discussed would not bring NATO forces to even the minimum number that the United Nations and the Afghan government estimate would be needed. Human rights groups welcome NATO's announcement, but with a great deal of skepticism, noting that the alliance has failed to live up to its previous commitments in Afghanistan. U.S. Seeks Troops for Iraq

With only five days before the beginning of an Iraqi interim government and increased United Nations presence there, the United States is scrambling to find countries willing to send forces to protect U.N. representatives. U.S. Offers Pact to N. Korea

The Bush administration makes its first detailed security offer to North Korea, as negotiations resume on that country's development of nuclear weapons. Under the plan, North Korea would receive aid if it agrees to dismantle its program. The United States would also provide assurances that it won't invade the North or overthrow President Kim Jong Il. A group of 26 former U.S. diplomats and senior military officers say that President Bush and his team should be voted out in the upcoming election. U.N. Unanimously Approves Iraq Resolution

The United Nations Security Council unanimously approves a resolution intended to cement the authority and legitimacy of Iraq's interim government. The final resolution comes after concerns regarding security prompted five re-writes.
