Marco Benevento: Reinventing Amy Winehouse

Benevento strips "You Know I'm No Good" of its memorable trappings (brassy voice, bold horns) and gives it a jazz piano treatment. At the outset, Benevento keeps the listener waiting, pumping the piano with a vamp that says, "Something is going to happen... but not yet." Then, out of the blue, comes the familiar Winehouse-ian melody line.

In "It Ain't Cool," it's not hard to figure out what message Alabama-born blues-country singer Will Kimbrough is trying to impart: "It ain't cool to talk about people when they're not around." To make sure listeners mind his message, he dispenses it in a sultry and understated voice with a bit of bite -- an homage to laidback blues-rocker J.J. Cale.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band: Chiseling The Blues

In the bitter old blues song "Some Cold Rainy Day," the dumpee declares to the dumper: You will come back someday -- when it's cold and rainy and you're old and sick and your stomach "hangs like an empty sack." Bertha "Chippie" Hill made the tune a hit in the 1920s, but now it's been reinvented as a 2010 stunner with vocals by folk-rock singer Cory Chisel.

The 12th and final cut on Smokey Robinson's new album, Time Flies When You're Having Fun, isn't even mentioned on the CD jacket. Why the secrecy? The song is Robinson's take on The Jackson 5's first hit, "I Want You Back"; he recorded it a year ago but decided not to list its title, so he wouldn't seem to be capitalizing on the death of the man he calls his "little brother."

Thank goodness for Burch's fumbling fingers: The latter-day honky-tonk artist accidentally erased the finished take of his song "Honey Blue," so he put an earlier version on his new album, Still Your Man. As a result, the track has an earthy, impromptu feel, as if a bunch of talented musicians just wandered into a studio and began jamming.
