Clever but not cloying, "Top of the Bottom" documents a pop singer's rise, rapid decline and resurrection to a more mundane new beginning. We Were Promised Jetpacks: Irritable Majesty

It doesn't take long for the Scottish band's misleadingly named "Quiet Little Voices" to get where it's going: There's little differentiating between the verses (such as they are) and the bombastic choruses, except that the latter explode into something almost impossibly thick, brash and over-the-top.

"Train Song" is exactly the sort of smart high-concept event that thrives on benefit CDs, complete with big names, a smartly chosen cover song and a simple arrangement. "Dying Is Fine" swipes a line from an E.E. Cummings poem and repurposes it in a catchy chorus. The song has appeared on early Ra Ra Riot singles, but it sounds especially polished and lively here, thanks in part to its sleek production and the surprisingly subtle strings, which add melancholy shading and a jolt of rhythm.
