Joyce MacDonald is Interim President and CEO of National Public Media, a subsidiary of NPR that is owned in partnership with PBS and WGBH and is responsible for corporate sponsorship sales. In this role, she provides leadership and direction to NPM in its critical mission of growing NPR's sponsorship revenues and those of the NPR Member Stations. She previously served as Chief of Staff for NPR, managing workflow and streamlining executive decision-making.
Beginning in 2008, MacDonald spent six years as Vice President of Member Partnership at NPR. The division, which serves as the primary liaison with Member Stations, manages NPR's business relationships with stations that air NPR programs. MacDonald oversaw the group's work to provide a wide range of resources and direct support for station program decision-making, management, promotion, fundraising, listener services, and related activities. She ensured that this team grew the scope, reach, and value of public radio by advancing NPR's many collaborative initiatives and projects with stations.
With more than 30 years of experience in media and marketing, including eight years as the NPR Director of Station Relations, MacDonald has a deep and contextual understanding of the current and rapidly-evolving media landscape as well as the daily challenges and realities facing both NPR and stations. As the NPR Director of Station Relations, MacDonald and her team achieved major advances in improving the NPR special news coverage plans, program launches and acquisitions, off-air promotion, and steady program carriage and audience growth.
Prior to joining NPR in 1999, MacDonald was Vice President for Affiliate Marketing with Sony Corporation's SW Networks, which produced and distributed radio programming. She was responsible for all marketing, sales, service, and research functions for the company. Her 22-person team increased the network's affiliated station count from 170 to over 1,000. MacDonald joined Sony after four years with ABC Radio Networks, where she was promoted to Far West Regional Director for Affiliate Marketing and was responsible for marketing programming and services to major- and medium-market radio stations. She launched her radio career as an account executive with WFNX Radio in Boston.
MacDonald graduated from Stonehill College in Massachusetts with a degree in business administration, and earned her Master of Science degree in broadcast administration from Boston University's College of Communication.
