The Circassian was a ship wreck in 1876, that killed 10 Shinnecock men and started a chain of events that lead to colonizers trying to label Shinnecock people as extinct in order to grab more land. Today's Episode marks the beginning of season 2 of the Ma's House Podcast, and to start things off strong we are joined by (extra) special guest Denise Silva Dennis. Denise (Weetahmoe) is an established artist and life long teacher, not to mention the Ma's House Workshop Coordinator and a well respected member of the community. Artist Profile Silva-Dennis graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art. Upon graduation, she received honors in her discipline. Silva-Dennis works primarily in acrylic for her figurative paintings. Her professional achievements include two paintings selected for the exhibit 'In Beauty It Has Begun...' sponsored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian Institute. She also won the Parrish Art Museum's Judge's Award in the painting category. Silva-Dennis is also an accomplished beadwork craftswoman. The traditional Eastern Woodland style of beadwork was handed down to her from her mother and elder women of Shinnecock and Hassanamisco-Nipmuc Nations. Her work includes mandala necklace and earring sets, beaded medicine fans, walking sticks, beaded cradleboards, beaded moccasins, and beaded crowns. Denise's beadwork pieces and paintings have been shown at various art galleries, museums, libraries, schools, and colleges throughout Long Island and Upstate, Clinton, New York, at Hamilton College's Bundy Center and Library. She was most recently seen as Trinculo in The Tempest at Circle Players in Piscataway, NJ in 2019. She is currently a member of the improv group Quest for the Missing Script, which can be found on YouTube, and she is a co-host of a Black nerd-focused podcast called The Black Nerd Project. To create, I rely on vintage photographs and my collection of personal portraits. I interpret the images through drawings on paper. I also use words to share my feelings and insight into social norms and narratives that deserve reexamination in today's time. I repeat fragments of words in order to archive history, now and then.
