African singer Youssou n'Dour was born in Dakar, Senegal, in 1959. He sang at neighborhood gatherings as a youngster and by his mid-teens was performing with Senegal's most successful 1970s pop group, the Star Band.

N'Dour's own ensemble, the Etoile de Dakar or The Super Etoile, was formed in 1979 and has become one of the top Afro-pop bands of all time.
