Dancing with the Chi-Town Squares

Listen to this story...

All Things Considered, June 28, 2005 · When commentator Angeli Primlani wants to go square-dancing, she hooks up with a club called the Chi-Town Squares. The members are mostly gay men, but recently, groups of older straight couples from the suburbs have started showing up at their dances.

"I found myself sitting in my car, in my garage, after a long day at work, unable to go into the house until after I'd listened to the whole [story]. I learned something (I'd never heard of gay square-dancing clubs, as a straight non-square-dancer), and the story provided an optimistic moment of light and hope for tolerance in a time when the news is so full of intolerance and conflict."
