Music of Eric von Essen
Violinist and producer Jeff Gauthier put together this beautiful tribute to Los Angeles jazz bassist Eric von Essen, who died in 1997. The Music of Eric von Essen Volume I features a variety of small ensembles with players Gauthier, Peter Erskine, Alan Pasqua, Alan Broadbent, Nels Cline and others. It's on Cryptogramophone, and Volumes II and III will be released over the next year and a half.
pop group from the 1960's with tight vocals and an infectious Latin sound. Bossa Cubana is a newly rereleased cd on the World Circuit/Nonesuch label.
Hearing Yma Sumac's voice for the first time is often shocking. The Peru-born singer, popular in the 1950's, has a range of some 4 1/2 octaves, and the exotic music she performs is embellished with growls and glissandi. The Ultimate Yma Sumac Collection is on Capitol Records.
Wayne Horvitz & Zony Mash
Weekend Edition listeners may remember Liane Hansen's recent interview with keyboardist/composer Wayne Horvitz about his Hammond-B-3-friendly band Zony Mash. A new cd, Upper Egypt takes its title from a Pharoah Sanders tune and is dedicated to the late guitarist Sonny Sharrock. Another new cd, under Wayne Horvitz' name, is more subdued and quite beautiful. Horvitz describes American Bandstand on Songlines Recordings as "Zony Mash unplugged."
