In case you missed it, we took a rocket ride to outer space for the holidays. But this week we re-dock at the mother ship Earth to ring in the new year toting a new mix that includes premieres from The Go! Team and The Amazing, new music from Panda Bear's upcoming album, Jessica Pratt and more.
But first, our journey back home leads us through an unexpected wormhole that results in a time warp: As this week's show opens, we find ourselves back in the year 2000, standing before the very first episode of All Songs Considered, "a music show for your computer!"
That's right. This year we celebrate our 15th birthday at All Songs Considered. To mark the occasion, each week we'll look back at the past decade and a half and share some of our favorite memories and highlights. We'll also be asking you to share some of your favorite moments.
In the meantime, enjoy this week's mix and, as always, let us know what you think in the comments section.
Songs Featured On This Episode
The Go! Team
- Song: The Scene Between
The Go! Team has long staked its reputation on crazy-catchy combinations of cheerleader chants, funk guitars and samples. On its newest record and first in more than four years, the band focuses more on melody and traditional pop structures. The Scene Between is due out March 24.
Panda Bear
- Song: Acid Wash
Animal Collective member Noah Lennox returns with a solo Panda Bear album on Jan. 13 called Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper. As with his previous work, the record is wonderfully unpredictable, with lots of head-spinning soundscapes.
The Amazing
- Song: The Headless Boy
The Amazing is a group from Sweden that makes super-chill tunes perfect for late night drives or winter meditations (but not at the same time, please). The group's latest album, Picture You, is due out Feb. 17.
Chadwick Stokes
- Song: Horse Comanche
Boston-based singer Chadwick Stokes makes sometimes-epic songs within songs that channel the unmistakable progressions and melodies of The Beatles. Stokes' new solo album, out Feb. 3, was produced by Iron and Wine's Sam Beam.
Jessica Pratt
- Song: Back, Baby
Jessica Pratt has an incredibly distinctive and unforgettable voice. Her latest album is a collection of spare acoustic songs, with just her voice and guitar, composed in the spirit of traditional British folk.
Red Baraat
- Song: Bhangra Pirates
It's impossible to stand still while listening to the brass-powered music of Brooklyn's Red Baraat. The sprawling, groove-heavy group celebrates the world's diverse sounds and cultures on its latest album, Gaadi Of Truth, due out Jan. 20.
