Welcome Back: We Kick Off 2011 With Great New Music

After a good holiday break -- Felix hibernated, I migrated to Latin America, to warmer climates -- it's good to be back! Even as 2011 has just begun, we have a ton of amazing new music to share with you.

I have to warn you, this week's show is a a roller coaster: We have ballads of love, hate and some far-out musical hallucination. Francisca Valenzuela, Chile’s rock and roll princess, presents her newest song, “Quiero Verte Mas” (“I Want To See You More”). This finds her in a very different mood than her previous work. She’s always been feisty and sarcastic, but here, our girl has fallen in love and ain’t to proud to beg.

Not everyone has mellowed out. We’ve got Mexican rocker Juan Cirerol, who is fed up with his 9-to-5 routine. I think he has a voice like Leonard Cohen's. Felix wasn’t too keen on him, but I love when a musician is singing about heartbreak or distress, and sounds like he’s really going through the tough time he’s describing. Speaking of distress, there’s Los Peyotes, an Argentine garage/surf rock band whose violent, trippy music belongs on a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack.

Finally, we’ve got some great cover songs this week. We take a listen to the new Enrique Bunbury/Heroes Del Silencio tribute album. The song I was digging was fellow Spaniard Bebe’s version of “El Boxeador.” I think it’s got an almost Tom Tom Club quality to it, but I’d love to hear your thoughts. We finish the show with a Caifanes/Jaguares tribute performed by Ozomatli.

I’m not going to lie, getting back from vacation was hard, trading in my chanclas (flip flops) for snowboots. But it’s so good to be back on this musical voyage with you all.

Ya Volvimos: Empezamos El 2011 Con Buena Música

Luego de unas buenas vacaciones (Felix hibernó, y yo migré a América Latina, hacia climas más cálidos0 ¡que bueno es estar de vuelta y detrás del micrófono! Y aunque el 2011 recién empieza, tenemos muchísima nueva música para compartir con ustedes.

Les tengo que dar una advertencia: el show de esta semana es como una montaña rusa, llena de emociones: tenemos una balada de amor, odio, y un par de psicodélicas alucinaciones musicales. Francisca Valenzuela, la princesa del rock chileno, nos presenta su mas reciente canción: “Quiero Verte Mas.” En esta canción, nuestra amiga esta de un humor distinto al que tenía en su previo trabajo: Ella siempre ha sido una chica peleadora, sarcástica, pero bueno, parece que últimamente, se enamoró.

No todos están de tan buen humor esta semana. Tenemos al rockero Mexicano Juan Cirerol, que esta harto de la rutina de su vida. Yo pienso que tiene una voz parecida a Leonard Cohen. A Felix no le gustó tanto su trabajo, pero a mi me encanta que un músico que canta sobre la angustia de un corazón roto y la decepción, suene como si realmente estuviese sufriendo. Hablando de angustia, tenemos a Los Peyotes, una banda Argentina de garage/surf rock que tiene una melodía tan violenta y psicodélica, alguien debería mandarle el nuevo disco a Quentin Tarantino para que lo incluya en su próxima película.

Finalmente, tenemos varios covers increíbles esta semana. Escuchamos al nuevo disco tributo a Enrique Bunbury/Heroes Del Silencio. A mi me encantó la versión que hizo Bebe de “El Boxeador.” Le siento una onda parecida al Tom Tom Club, pero me encantaría saber que piensan ustedes. Cerramos el show con un excelente cover que hace Ozomatli de “Nubes” por la legendaria banda Caifanes/Jaguares.

No voy a mentir: siempre es difícil volver de unas vacaciones y peor cuando uno tiene que sacarse las chanclas y ponerse las botas de nieve. Pero a la vez ¡es tan bueno estar otra vez embarcada en este viaje musical con todos ustedes!
