Mexicans With Guns: What's With Their Name?

In our last show, we featured a track by Mexicans With Guns (MwG), a musical project of San Antonio-based Chicano DJ Ernest Gonzalez.

During the show I wondered out loud about the name. I noted that it stood out to me given the unfortunate wave of violence attributed to Mexican drug cartels.

So I asked Gonzalez about it and wanted to share his e-mail answer with you, because it shows a deep commitment not only to his musical expression but also to Mexico.

He explained:

Mexicans with Guns is a loaded name, pun intended, and brings to mind a wide assortment of issues. If, by keeping the name, people start thinking and talking about what it means to them, then I feel like the name is successful. Speaking personally, the name has made me think about a variety of topics such as gun rights, the border, immigration, education, stereotypes, etc. ... With the exponentially expanding Mexican-American population and influence in American culture, I feel like it is becoming more and more relevant to be aware of these issues and more importantly address them.

I get it.

Not only do I get it, I can get behind his choice.

I prefer musicians who take a stand on issues that are important to them. I'm old school: I grew up with Bob Dylan then found a place for myself in the messages of Bruce Springsteen and Victor Jara.

To me, Gonzalez's explanation is not unlike Miles Davis' decision to name his 1986 album Tutu after the South African bishop and freedom fighter Desmond Tutu, all in the name of calling attention to the work of Tutu in apartheid-era South Africa.

While MwG's music is certainly not overtly political, Gonzalez's thought behind sticking with the name is taking a stand.

So, señor Gonzalez, rock on with your lucha libre mask firmly in place and we'll look forward to a full album release soon.

Mexicans With Guns: ¿Y Ese Nombre?

En nuestro más reciente programa, estrenamos una canción por Mexicans With Guns (Mexicanos Con Revólveres), el proyecto musical del DJ Ernest Gonzalez, un artista chicano que reside en San Antonio.

Durante el show, tuve mis dudas sobre el nombre de su proyecto. Me sorprendió debido a la ola de violencia que ha arrasado a Mexico en los últimos años.

Se lo pregunté a Gonzalez, y quisiera compartir con ustedes la respuesta que el me mandó vía email, porque creo que demuestra convicción y conciencia de lo que esta ocurriendo en México.

Según el:

Mexicans with Guns es un nombre explosivo, con muchas connotaciones. Si al escuchar ese nombre, las personas comienzan a pensar y hablar en su significado, entonces yo siento que ese nombre ha servido su propósito. A mi personalmente el nombre me ha hecho pensar en una variedad de temas, tales como el derecho a portar armas, las políticas de la frontera, la inmigración, la educación y los estereotipos. La población de descendencia mexicana esta creciendo en este país, y esta influenciando cada vez mas la cultura de los Estados Unidos. Siento que cada vez es mas importante estar al tanto de estos temas, y debatirlos.

Entiendo exactamente lo que Gonzalez se propone. No solo lo entiendo, sino que lo apoyo.

Yo prefiero a los músicos que toman una posición sobre los temas que les importan. Tal vez porque yo soy de la vieja escuela: Crecí con artistas como Bob Dylan, y luego me identifiqué con los mensajes de Bruce Springsteen y Victor Jara.

Para mí, la explicación de Gonzalez se parece a la de Miles Davis, cuando en 1986 decidió ponerle Tutu a su album: Para honrar al obispo Desmond Tutu, que peleó por la igualdad de derechos en Sudáfrica.

La música de Mexicans with Guns no es abiertamente política, pero su decisión de no cambiar su controversial nombre si lo es.

Por eso lo felicito Señor Gonzales- y aguardo con ansias su nuevo álbum.
