Everest Fight Reveals Cultural Chasm Between Climbers, Sherpas

This past weekend, Sherpas on Mount Everest attacked a team of elite climbers after an altercation about etiquette and falling ice on route to Camp 3. Audie Cornish talks with the photographer who was part of the climbing team, Jonathan Griffith, about the skirmish and a widening cultural chasm between local Sherpas and western climbers who pay big buck to summit the mountain.

In Japan: Running Out Of Places To Put Radioactive Water

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was crippled in March 2011 by an earthquake and tsunami. Groundwater continues to pour into its reactor buildings, and workers are pumping it out. A forest likely will be cut down to make room for more storage tanks. Meanwhile, some storage facilities are leaking.

But another British naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace, played a major role in developing the theory of natural selection before fading into obscurity. An argument between three climbers and Sherpa guides on Mount Everest reportedly devolved into a fistfight on the mountain, close to Camp III, at 24,500 feet. The Nepali Times calls it "the highest brawl in world history," as well as evidence of a culture clash.
