AIDS Conspiracy Beliefs Strong Among U.S. Blacks

A recent poll finds that many African-Americans believe the virus that causes AIDS is man-made, and is part of a larger conspiracy to decimate black populations. More than half of those surveyed believed there is a cure for AIDS, but it is being withheld from the poor. NPR's Tony Cox speaks with Laura Bogart, a behavioral scientist for the RAND Corporation research group and a co-author of the study, and with Phill Wilson, director of the Black AIDS Institute, an HIV/AIDS policy center in Los Angeles.

According to a new report by the United Nations Millennium Project, every 3.6 seconds, someone dies of starvation -- and it's usually a child. Last week, the United Nations unveiled a comprehensive strategy to turn the tide of extreme global poverty. Crisis Severe in Aceh

One week after a tsunami killed tens of thousands in coastal areas of Indonesia's northern Aceh province, relief workers are only beginning to make headway. The scale of the disaster, and the need for aid, is staggering -- there are no vehicles to carrying needed supplies, and aid workers fear mass starvation if food supplies aren't distributed in the next several days. NPR's Adam Davidson reports.

Indian Survivors Seek Water

With clean-up efforts underway, relief workers in southern India concentrate on removing corpses and finding potable water. Emergency workers are also trying to get drinking water to tens of thousands of survivors. Health workers worry contaminated drinking water may result in more deaths then the 7,000 the tsunami caused. Laura Womak reports.
