Dec. 17, 2007:
McCain hoped that Lieberman's endorsement would help him in N.H. with independent voters.
Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democratic candidate for vice president in 2000, endorses Republican Sen. John McCain for president.
Lieberman, of Connecticut, is an independent, having lost the Democratic primary for renomination in 2006. He was re-elected that November as an indie.
Both Lieberman and McCain are supporters of the war effort in Iraq, a position that contributed to Lieberman's primary defeat in '06.
McCain is currently trailing Mitt Romney in New Hampshire, whose first-in-the-nation primary is Jan. 8, 2008. But he hopes that Lieberman's backing will help him with independents in the state; eight years ago, independent voters were mostly responsible for McCain's victory over George W. Bush in the N.H. primary.
