Mississippi doesn't often get to be first on most state listings but the Gallup Organization says it's first in at least one attribute: it's the state with the most people identifying themselves as conservatives - 50.5 percent.
The only surprise to me was that it wasn't a tie between Mississippi and South Carolina. The Palmetto State came in at 45.8 percent, lower than the Dakotas, even. That could be a function of the aging populations of those upper Midwestern states.
The most liberal state as measured by the percentage of voters who claim that label was Vermont at 30.5 percent. Again, not a surprise for a state that could send Sen. Bernie Sanders to the Senate. (The District of Columbia was actually the most liberal jurisdiction, at 41.1 percent.
One thing to notice. The least conservative of the top ten most conservative states, Arkansas at 45 percent was more conservative than DC was liberal.
