Last week, the Political Junkie segment on NPR's Talk of the Nation hosted both Arkansas Sen. Blanche Lincoln and her major opponent in the May 18 Democratic primary, Lt. Gov. Bill Halter.  You can hear that segment by clicking here.

Today the venue is the Pennsylvania Senate race, and once again we have the two major candidates running inthe Democratic primary:  Sen. Arlen Specter, first elected in 1980, who left the GOP for the Democratic Party in April 2009; and Rep. Joe Sestak, who is challenging Specter in the May 18 primary.

Former Rep. Pat Toomey, a conservative who narrowly lost to Specter in the 2004 GOP primary, was scheduled to be on the program but canceled last night as his wife went into labor.  The excuses these candidates come up with.

UPDATE:  Toomey campaign aide Nachama Soloveichik informed us this morning that Kris Toomey gave birth to a boy, Duncan Olin Toomey, last night at 11:45 p.m.  Kris and Duncan, who was born two weeks early, are "doing well."

Also on the segment:  Results from yesterday's primaries in Indiana, North Carolina and Ohio ... Florida Gov. Charlie Crist leaves the Republican Party to plot out an independent Senate bid ... Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT) battles for his political life in Saturday's GOP state convention ... new polling numbers on immigration ... no criminal charges lodged against South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford ... and the Jokester-In-Chief trots out his stuff at the White House Correspondents Dinner.

Join host Neal Conan and me every Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET for the Junkie segment on TOTN, where you can often, but not always, find interesting conversation, useless trivia questions and sparkling jokes. And you can win a Political Junkie T-shirt!  (Neal is off today; guest host is Rebecca Roberts).

If your local NPR station doesn't carry TOTN, you can always hear the program on the Web or on HD Radio. And if you are a subscriber to XM/Sirius radio, you can find the show there as well (siriusly).
