I truly feel for Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, who announced at a news conference today that he misspoke when he said he served in Vietnam. He said he meant to say he served during the Vietnam era.
Similarly, I'm sorry when I said I was elected president of the United States in 1984. I meant to say that I was alive in the United States in 1984, during which there was a presidential election.
I'm also sorry for what turned out to be a rather lame ScuttleButton puzzle from last week.
First, a quick detour to the rules. Every Friday on this blog I offer up a vertical presentation of buttons. Just take one word or one concept per button, add 'em up, and arrive at a familiar saying or a name. (Seriously: a saying that people from Earth might be remotely familiar with.) Submit your answer and hope you're the person chosen at random. That's it!
Oh wait. You MUST include your name and city/state to be eligible.
Also, the answer does not necessarily have to be political. For instance, the answer to a puzzle awhile back was "Minnesota Twins" — not political at all, unless you're thinking Mondale and Humphrey instead of Killebrew and Oliva.
Here are last week's buttons, in case you forgot:
Merry Christmas/Happy New Year (with a picture of Santa Claus) — No explanation needed.
I Believe Gennier, Paula, Monica, Etc. — I have no trouble with buttons trashing anyone, including former presidents, but at least could they spell Gennifer Flowers' first name correctly?
Meg 2010 A New California — Meg Whitman, a candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in the Golden State.
So, when you add Santa + Monica + California, you might end up with ...
Santa Monica, California. The only question, as several wrote in, is why? Why pick that as the ScuttleButton answer?
Answer: Because I can.
OK, I know, this one stunk up the joint. I promise a better one on Friday. Regardless, this week's winner, chosen completely at random, is (drum roll) ... William Coale of El Cerrito, Calif.
