The Political Junkie
The race for the GOP presidential nomination continues. This past weekend businessman Herman Cain won the Florida straw poll that was supposed to be Rick Perry's for the taking. The Texas governor took a disappointing second. Mitt Romney won Saturday's Michigan straw poll. But many wonder how much those polls matter? Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) won the Iowa straw poll and now her ratings hover in the single digits. How do you plan a campaign for such a long primary with straw polls, debates and finally caucuses and votes? Political junkie Ken Rudin and host Neal Conan talk with Chip Saltsman about these questions. He ran Mike Huckabee's campaign in 2008. Neal and Ken will also recap the week in politics from the latest Republican debate to controversial redistricting in Utah.
Immigrants And Integration
Former housing secretary Henry Cisneros argues there used to be a number of organizations that helped immigrants integrate into American society, including churches, political organizations and unions. The diminished reach and membership of many of those groups today makes it more difficult for Latino immigrants to integrate, he says. In response, Cisneros is designing a new program, with the help of Rabbi Aryeh Scheinberg, to foster better integration and help Latino immigrants succeed in America. He joins host Neal Conan to talk about what he's hoping to change and how it might improve the lives of immigrants.
The Life Of A Fashion Model
They're beautiful and glamorous — and many little girls aspire to be fashion models when they grow up. But the truth about the lifestyle often lies far from the fantasy. Many models make very little money in an industry that chews them up and spits them out before they reach their mid-20's. Host Neal Conan talks with fashion model-turned sociologist Ashley Mears about true story of fashion modeling — from both a sociological and an economic standpoint.
Music And Activism
Until he released his most recent album, Iraqi-American musician and activist Stephan Said went by the name Stephan Smith. He began using his mother's maiden name after executives at major U.S. labels said he could never make it as a musician in America with an Arabic name. With his latest album, "difrent," he reclaims his birth name and continues to voice messages about activism and the American dream, while incorporating more international styles. Host Neal Conan talks with Said about overcoming the challenges of marketing music with a message.
