We Plan Your Weekend: Twin Cities

On Fridays we ask someone at one of NPR's member stations to point us toward a few great events in their town for the weekend. This week, Barb Abney, the mid-day host at 89.3 The Current, Minnesota Public Radio, in St. Paul, Minn., picks the best of a very busy Saturday night in the Twin Cities.

(For those not in the Twin Cities area, don't worry. NPR Music has you covered.)

Here in the Twin Cities, we always seem to have a multitude of entertainment choices on any given weekend. If you have the ability to be in more than one place at a time, then we've got plenty to offer this Saturday.

The Variety Showcase Show
10pm Saturday at Bryant Lake Bowl
If you can't wait for National Poetry Slam to begin next week, get a small dose during The Variety Showcase Show at Bryant Lake Bowl with some spoken word goodness from Dessa, as well as World Poetry Slam Champion Ed Mabrey. There will also be some improv and, of course, bowling!

Lowertown Music Festival
Saturday afternoon at Mears Park
St. Paul's Lowertown Music Festival features an impressive collection of much loved locals including Cloud Cult, Mason Jennings, Tapes 'N Tapes, Peter Wolf Crier, and more. Koo Koo Kangaroo will be kicking off the outdoor fests' action by performing their incredible live variety of indie/hip-hop/dance music that can be enjoyed by kids as well as their grown-ups.

Kings Go Forth
8pm Saturday at Cedar Cultural Center
The Milwaukee outfit, Kings Go Forth, have been generating a great deal of buzz lately for their updated take on 70's rock and soul. Did I mention they're a traveling 10-piece? They're playing at the Cedar Cultural Center.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit
7pm Saturday at the Weesner Family Amphitheater
Spend a day enjoying animals in cages and then catch some southern rock animals on stage when former Drive-By Trucker Jason Isbell brings his 400 Unit to the Minnesota Zoo's Weesner Family Amphitheater along with Lucero.

The Icy Shores (and more)
8pm Saturday at The Fine Line Music Cafe
If you're looking for something a little less spendy, head over to Fine Line Music Cafe for a collection of unsigned Minnesota bands including The Jake Rowan Band, the Duluth trio, The Alrights, Usonia featuring members of This World Fair, Ready Goes, and The Nadas, and my choice for local band you MUST see in 2010, The Icy Shores.
