Pope 'Undaunted' After Woman Knocks Him Down; See Video From St. Peter's

As you've probably heard by now, there were some scary moments yesterday at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican when a woman knocked down Pope Benedict XVI as he led the procession at the start of Christmas Eve Mass.

The 82-year-old pope was not seriously injured, and went on to deliver his annual Christmas message. But, the AP says that:

French Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, an 87-year-old Vatican diplomat, fractured his hip in the commotion and will be operated on at Rome's Gemelli hospital, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said.

The woman, according to AP, is "Susanna Maiolo, 25, a Swiss-Italian national with psychiatric problems."

There are many videos of the incident online. Here's one from close range, courtesy of the AP:

Today, NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports from Rome, an "undaunted" pope delivered his Christmas Day message from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. She says he "asserted that while mankind is being buffeted by a financial crisis, it is being even more profoundly affected by a moral crisis and by the painful wounds of wars and conflicts."
