Obama: 'The Election's Over.' McCain: 'I'm Reminded Of That Every Day'

The bi-partisan health care "summit" continues at Blair House. As we said earlier, NPR's Scott Hensley is live-blogging the forum here. He's our go-to guy for coverage.

But a few minutes ago, there was some back-and-forth between the 2008 presidential contenders.

Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the '08 GOP nominee, spent considerable time criticizing what he believes were the closed-door, Democratic-controlled procedures that produced health care overhaul bills in the House and Senate.

"Both of us during the campaign promised change in Washington," McCain told Obama. "Eight times, you said that negotiations on health care reform would be conducted with the C-SPAN cameras (watching). I'm glad more than a year later that they are here. Unfortunately, this product was not produced in that fashion":

As the senator continued, the president tried to interject -- but McCain pressed on:

Which led shortly later to an exchange that began with Obama reminding the senator who's in the White House -- "I'm reminded of that every day," McCain said with a laugh:

The latest NPR.org story about the health care conference leads with this:

"A health care overhaul has become a 'very ideological, very partisan battle,' President Obama said Thursday in opening a summit he hopes will help revolve that divide."
