Gunfire Exchanged At Korean Border
North Korean soldiers may have fired at South Korean soldiers at their shared demilitarized zone. South Korea says soldiers from the North fired first but none of the South Korean soldiers were hurt. Tension has been high since March, when a South Korean warship was sunk, killing 46 sailors. North Korea is accused of torpedoing the vessel, but rejects the finding and won't apologize. North Korean officials haven't commented on today's skirmish but has repeatedly published belligerent statements toward South Korea and the U.S.
WAIT, THEY WANT TO TALK
Catherine Ashton, the European Union's foreign policy chief says Iran is willing to set a new date to talk about its nuclear program after Nov. 10. Ashton called the Iranian offer 'significant'. The EU and U.S. believe Iran is hiding the true nature of its nuclear program, and is trying to build a weapon, a charge Iran denies. This week, U.S. and European diplomats are talking about finding a way to enrich Iran's nuclear fuel outside Iran for use in its reactors. It's what's happening with Iran's Bushehr plant: Russia is swapping out the nuclear material. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the U.S. doesn't see Bushehr as a threat.
TROPICAL STORM SHARY FORMS
The National Hurricane Center says Shary, which formed early today, is headed for Bermuda. The system will sweep north through the central Atlantic and curve to the east, posing no danger to any other land. Bermuda will get brushed this afternoon, with top winds of about 40 miles per hour and a lot of rain.
TSUNAMI DEATH TOLL RISES
Indonesian officials say at least 408 people are dead following Monday's major earthquake and tsunami off Sumatra island. More than 300 people are missing and feared swept out to sea. One survivor is an 18-month-old boy discovered wedged in a tree. His parents perished with many others in the devastated Mendawi Islands: crews are finding hundreds of bodies of victims on beaches.
ARKANSAS SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER WILL QUIT
Clint McCance, a member of the Midland School Board is resigning after his comments that gay and lesbian teens should kill themselves. McCance posted statements on his Facebook page ridiculing a call for students to wear purple, showing support for homosexual students victimized by bullying. He immediately drew fire, including from Arkansas's Commissioner of Education. Speaking to Anderson Cooper last night on CNN, McCance apologized for his poor speech and didn't wish death on anyone.
