Top 10 Performance Review Euphemisms

Talk of the Nation will be discussing performance reviews today. Experts are divided on their value in the workplace.

Earlier in the year, Steve Inskeep spoke with UCLA business professor Samuel Culbert, who in no uncertain terms said performance reviews are completely worthless. His words: "First, they're dishonest and fraudulent. And second, they're just plain bad management."

One thing that always struck me about performance reviews is the amount of rhetorical contortions mangers and employees go through to keep from saying what they really want to say.

To that end, we asked our fans on Facebook what the best euphemism they've heard in their career was. Here's a Top 10:

10. Suzanne LaTulipe: ‎"Don't think of this as being fired. Think of this as an opportunity to move on."

9. Dan Snyder: ‎"Meritorious performance" means average performance.

8. Carrie Robbins Packard: ‎"Strong Personality" in describing someone who is really an outright (witch).

7. Mark Costa: I worked at a perfect job for a nightmare manager. My first annual review summed up the difficulties in our relationship in one sentence: "Mark sometimes has trouble communicating with myself." (SIC)

6. Linda Grant: ‎"You're a square peg in a round hole."

5. Brian Schmitt: ‎"Has cleared the Low-hanging Fruit" for someone who just did the easy parts of their job.

4. Gustavo Rodriguez: Teachable moment.

3. Donne Copenhaver: ‎"Opportunity for improvement"  is a nice dull way to say "you're incompetent in at least one aspect of your job."
