Death Toll From Cholera Outbreak In Haiti Surpasses 1,000
The AP reports that health officials now say the death toll in Haiti from the cholera outbreak has reached 1,034.
The health ministry death toll of 1,034 -- accurate up to Sunday -- is 117 higher than the last official toll announced during the weekend, nearly a month after the disease surfaced in the desperately poor Caribbean nation.
Authorities also said 16,799 people had received hospital treatment, some 2,150 more than the last update on Nov. 14.
The AP quotes aid works saying official figures may be underestimating the epidemic. They add:
Demonstrations stoked by fear of the disease continue in northern Haiti. They are primarily targeting U.N. soldiers suspected of brining the infection to Haiti.
