— The Bureau of Economic Analysis says consumer spending rose a seasonally adjusted 0.4 percent in November from October, "a moderate pace" that should still have given the economy "a boost ahead of the holidays," the Associated Press writes.

— Orders for long-lasting durable goods (excluding the volatile transportation sector) rose 2.4 percent in November from October, the Census Bureau says.

— The Bureau of Labor Statistics says 420,000 people filed first-time claims for jobless benefits, down 3,000 from the previous week.
