You might wonder why Hiss Golden Messenger's new album is called Quietly Blowing It — because bandleader M.C. Taylor has not been blowing it at all.

Since World Cafe host Raina Douris last spoke with Taylor in 2019, Hiss Golden Messenger's last album, Terms of Surrender, was nominated for best Americana album at the Grammy Awards. And when the pandemic hit, Taylor didn't spend his time bingeing reality TV (not that there's anything wrong with that); instead, he wrote and recorded an entire new record.

In this session, the singer-songwriter talks about that album, his experience over this past year and how his music evolves over time, which you'll hear as he performs songs from throughout his career, beginning with "Sanctuary" from his latest record.
