Haitian Voters a Force in Florida Election

This fall, an estimated 2 million Haitian Americans will head to the polls, according to the Haitian American Leadership Council. Half a million of them live in Florida, which will be the focus of world attention come November due to its controversial role in the 2000 election. Youth Radio producer Sara Harris visited one Haitian community just north of Miami, where the face of Florida politics is changing.

Nick Romero is a young delegate at the GOP convention this week in New York. Youth Radio is following him from his home in California to New York City. Before coming to the convention, Nick talked about life as a College Republican on a campus that feels heavily liberal. He's a political junkie who loves the protestors as much as the other delegates, because he loves people who are passionate about politics.

Alejandro Aviles is a 21-year-old alternate delegate from Arkansas -- the youngest Hispanic member of the state's delegation to the Democratic National Convention. He was drawn to Boston by the idea of being with a large group of politically active Latinos. Now Aviles is spending a lot of time networking with the party's Latino caucus. School for Newly Arrived Haitians

An American poetry therapist and a Haitian-American U.S. Army veteran founded a public high school four years ago for the growing Haitian community in the small city in Delray Beach, Fla. They named the school the Toussaint L'Ouverture School for the Arts and Social Justice, after the father of Haiti's independence movement. These students, most recently arrived from Haiti, learn in their native Creole language and in English. Hear a report from Youth Radio.
