Starr & Blumenthal NPR's Mara Liasson reports that the battle between the White House and independent counsel Kenneth Starr has escalated with new subpoenas issued for White House aide Sidney Blumenthal and investigator Terry Lenzner. Starr is apparantly trying to find the source of news reports over the weekend critical of his office, arguing that these could be part of an effort to undermine his investigation. Blumenthal said he is outraged by the subpoena, calling it an attempt to limit his First Amendment right to talk to reporters. Both he and Lenzner were asked to appear today before the Whitewater grand jury looking into allegations that President Clinton tried to cover up an affair with an intern.
