Pitchers Hit Major League Baseball parts with one of its oldest traditions this season. For the first time, American League teams will play National League teams during the REGULAR season. Up to now, that's only been done in the World Series. As part of the experiment with inter-league play, American League pitchers will bat for the first time since 1973 -- that was the year designated hitters replaced American league pitchers at the plate. NPR's Tom Goldman reports from spring training in Florida on how pitchers are getting ready for their new jobs as batters.
