Polio NPR's Joanne Silberner reports on new recommendations for polio vaccination. An advisory panel to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that the oral form of the vaccine be dropped, in favor of four injections. The shots are given to infants and children. The oral vaccine is more effective in preventing polio, but in rare cases, it gives children the disease. The shots appear to be safer but are less effective.
