The Festa Della Spiga (FESS-tah DELL-ah SPEE-gah) a Sicilian harvest festival, is a tribute to the god of fertility, an offering of appreciation for good harvests. It takes place in the small hill town of Gangi (GAHN-jee). Though it continues to be celebrated after thousands of years, the meaning behind it has changed recently. A global agricultural economy is threatening the small family farms that, for centuries, have been the heart of the community and the reason for the festival. Frank Browning reports.
