According to Koppel the program actually began in November 1979 as a series of late night special reports after 65 Americans were taken hostage at the American embassy in Iran. The series was titled America Held Hostage. On March 24, 1980 - Day 142 of the hostage crisis - the broadcast was renamed Nightline.
