On Gold Mountain NPR's Andy Bowers reports from Los Angeles on the opera adaptation of Lisa See's 1995 family memoir, On Gold Mountain. It's the story of See's great-grandfather, Fong See, who came to California in the 19th century to work on the railroad and became a successful businessman. See wrote the libretto, and Nathan Wang composed the music. It's being staged as a 'community opera' by Los Angeles Opera Director Peter Hemmings and is the first in a series in which amateurs and professionals join forces to tell stories of California's various cultures.
