Nicaragua Elections NPR's Gerry Hadden reports Daniel Ortega, manqui Marxist and erstwhile leader of the Soviet-backed Sandinistas in their 1980s' war with the U.S.-funded Contra rebels, is back on the world stage. This time he is the leading candidate in Nicaragua's presidential election. Ortega is running for his Sandinista National Liberation Front party and leads the ruling party candidate by a few percentage points in the polls.
