Cardinal Mahony NPR's Richard Gonzales reports that in the past few weeks, Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles has been embroiled in an expanding controversy about what he knew about sexually abusive priests and when he knew it. The cardinal said a few days ago that he made a mistake when he transferred an accused pedophile priest to a Los Angeles hospital without informing anyone of the allegations. It was the first time he spoke about a specific case involving the Los Angeles Archdiocese, the nation's largest. Mahony has dismissed several priests for sexual misconduct, but his refusal to name names or give specifics has prompted at least one plaintiff's lawyer to label Mahony "the Teflon cardinal."
