Philippines - American Hostages NPR's Eric Westervelt reports Philippine forces attempted to free two American hostages from Abu Sayyaf rebels today, but the operation resulted in the death of one of the hostages, Martin Burnham. Burnham's wife was wounded but is expected to survive. A third hostage, a Philippine citizen, also died. Missionary work took the Burnhams to the Philippines, where they were kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf, an Islamic militant group, a year ago.
