STEVE INSKEEP, host:
NPR's business news starts with a call from Apple's iPhone.
(Soundbite of music)
INSKEEP: The company says it sold nearly nine million iPhones in the most recent quarter. That is more than double the number of iPhones it sold in the same three-month period last year. Apple reported earnings late yesterday, and says sales of its Internet smartphone were especially strong in Europe and Asia. In China, iPhone sales increased by more than nine times.
Apple also sold plenty of Mac computers, iPods and now iPads, saying overall quarterly earnings rose nearly 90 percent.
