The resort of Praia da Luz, in southern Portugal, has been in the eye of a media storm since a 4-year-old British girl disappeared in early May while her parents were having dinner at a hotel restaurant.

The parents have stayed in the resort town as the investigation has proceeded and have used the Internet and other means of publicity to draw international attention to the case. Dozens of reporters were on hand this weekend when the parents marked the 100th day since Madeleine McCann's disappearance. British celebrities, including author J.K. Rowling, have raised about $2 million to help find the little girl.

All of that has caused unease and some resentment among the Portuguese.
