Bartender Derek Brown suggests bitters to enliven your cocktails. "Whenever you taste bitters, there's this visceral reaction [that] sends a signal directly to your brain: 'These are going to kill you -- or these could be fun,'" he says.
If you're going to be watching the Emmy Awards ceremony tonight, you might want to think of a nice drink to go along with it.
"Mad Men is probably up for an Emmy, so let's go with the old fashioned," bartender Derek Brown suggests.
"Take a thin lemon peel with no pith." He suggests being very careful with a vegetable peeler to do this. Then "drop in the bottom of rocks glass, 1/4 to 1/2 ounce simple syrup," he continues, "dashes of bitters of choice -- fudge bitters perhaps – two ounces rye whiskey, add ice, stir until you get [the] dilution you want. Delicious. It'll make you feel like Don Draper -- on a good day!" He laughs.
If that's not quite your drink, however, here's another suggestion: an Angostura sour.
1-1/2 ounces Angostura bitters
1 ounce simple syrup
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
1 egg white
Dry-shake the egg white with the lime juice. Add the bitters and syrup, then ice and shake. Strain into a glass.
