Lori Bellante evacuated her family from their home in Lakeside, Calif., to escape the wildfires. She says she is grateful that she had time to pack up and get out safely, compared with the wildfires in 2003 that took the lives of friends and claimed her home. With some time to chose, she packed up animals, pictures and food before heading to a shelter with her in-laws.

Bellante speaks with Steve Inskeep.
