U.S. Launches Offensives Against Insurgents in Iraq, Afghanistan
STEVE INSKEEP, host:
This morning we're tracking fighting against insurgents in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The US military says it has begun an offensive in western Iraq. The Chicago Tribune reporter who's embedded with the troops there says that US Marines are moving through the desert. It's an effort to intercept the flow of foreign fighters from Syria. The US offered a body count from the operation, saying that 75 enemy fighters have been killed so far.
The Marines are also busy in Afghanistan where they say they tracked down and killed a number of insurgents. Two US Marines were killed there.
