As 2006 dawns, Toast of the Nation heads to New Orleans to ring in the year -- or more accurately, to play and dance in the year.
Of the choice, the event's organizers say the city and area devastated by hurricanes in 2005 seemed a good place to celebrate the promise of 2006. The fact that New Orleans is the crucible of jazz -- and renowned for its ability to have a good time -- didn't hurt, either.
The night's music begins at Tipitina's, the renowned club in the city's Uptown neighborhood. We hear from both traditional and modern lineups, from old-time favorites the Hot 8 Brass Band to the party-driven funk of Galactic.
Also included are shows from Florida, Boston, Missouri and Portland, where the jazz stylings of Pink Martini provide a finale to the evening's live shows.
