Cher is having a garage sale, celebrity-style. The singer and actress is selling some of her belongings at an auction that is expected to raise more than a million dollars.

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Now here's news of another celebrity known by a single name.

(Soundbite of song, Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves)

CHER (Singer): (Singing) I was born in the wagon of a traveling show, my mama used to dance for the money they'd throw. Papa would do whatever he could...

MONTAGNE: Cher is auctioning off some of her belongings. The diva of film, song and TV is selling about 800 treasures from what she calls her gothic collection.

(Soundbite of song, Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves)

CHER: (Singing) Gypsies, tramps and thieves…

STEVE INSKEEP, host:

She's remodeling the house in Malibu, California. A spokesman says Cher is going for a Moroccan/Tibetan look and selling the gothic revival items.

MONTAGNE: I'm shocked she's just now going to Moroccan/Tibetan. That is so old.

INSKEEP: Why? Is Moroccan/Tibetan, is it like - I don't know. I have no style.

MONTAGNE: Well, kind of. It's just teak in that. It's been - I mean I have - my whole house is filled with that stuff, but it goes back 10 years at least.

INSKEEP: So she's going retro. So Sotheby's will be auctioning the old items. Items like these:

MONTAGNE: A pair of late Regency gothic revival oak side tables, circa 1830.

INSKEEP: A red velvet dress with matching cape, as worn on TV.

MONTAGNE: A northern Italian terra cotta figure of Christ dating to the 16th century.

INSKEEP: And this rare conveyance from the early 21st century, a 2003 Hummer.

MONTAGNE: The auction is intended to raise about $1 million for charity. And Cher says she's willing to give up the goods even though, she says, I've loved everything I ever bought.

(Soundbite of music)

Unidentified Singer: (Singing) Take me home, just me and you forever…

MONTAGNE: This is MORNING EDITION from NPR News. I'm Renee Montagne.

INSKEEP: And I'm Steve Inskeep.
