R&B singer Gerald Levert died Friday in his hometown of Cleveland. Farai Chideya has a remembrance of his career.

And now some sad news: The voice of R&B crooner Gerald Levert has been forever silenced. He died in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, Friday. And he was just 40 years old. The son of O'Jays legend Eddie Levert, Gerald started his musical career early. He formed the musical group LeVert with his younger brother Sean and friend Marc Gordon. The trio broke on to the music scene in the late 1980 with hits like Casanova.

LEVERT (Musical Group): (Singing) I ain't much on Casanova. Me and Romeo ain't never been friends.

CHIDEYA: With his growling baritone and strong stage presence, Gerald Levert went solo in 1991. His chart toppers included My Forever Love and I'd Give Anything to Fall In Love.

Mr. GERALD LEVERT (Singer): (Singing) And I'd give anything and everything to fall in love just this one time...

CHIDEYA: Later, Gerald Levert toured and recorded with his father Eddie. One of their hits was a remake of the classic Wind Beneath My Wings.

Mr. LEVERT: (Singing) But Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, I've got it all here in my heart.

CHIDEYA: Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer Gerald Levert will be missed.
