Singer Denny Doherty's 1960s Pop Legacy
Denny Doherty, a member of the 1960s folk-rock group The Mamas and the Papas, died Friday at 66. "California Dreamin'" was among the classics in which Doherty sang the male lead. The Mamas and the Papas was one of the first groups to feature male and female singers equally. Their shimmery harmonies — arranged by Papa John Phillips — propelled them to the top of the charts between 1966 and 1968.
